Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are a non-shedding, affectionate, active breed of dog. They are playful their entire lives and demand attention and affection. Every person they encounter is a new best friend they just haven't met yet.
Korra, Spring 2022 litter.
Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are originally from Ireland, dating back to at least 1785, and are considered the oldest terrier breed in Ireland. The breed was accepted into the Irish Kennel Club (IKC) offical list of recognized breeds in 1937, but was not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) until 1973.
Silverwolfe South breeds AKC purebred Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers. All of our puppies go through Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), are microchipped, are dewormed and given their first round of vaccines, and are eligible to be registered with the AKC. Our breeding dogs have been DNA tested for PLN and have their test results on file with Penn State Vet labs. We hope to someday eliminate this disease from all Wheaten Terriers.
There are two types of fur in this breed, the Irish coat, which is an all-weather coat well suited for work outdoors, and the Heavy (American) coat, which is a bit thicker, fluffier, and softer. Oftentimes the American coat is curlier, as well. This is what is most often seen in the show ring in the United States due to it's overall floofiness. Both coat types are non-shedding, thus requiring regular brushing to prevent matting and remove dead hairs that do not fall out on their own. A non-shedding dog is not a maintenance free dog, it just means less fur mess all around your house.
